Drive Safely Work Week Just Weeks Away!

For close to 20 years, the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) has put on the “Drive Safely Work Week” campaign.  This is a week-long campaign that takes place every year to help to raise awareness and get more employers and employees to stay safe on the road.  This year’s campaign is almost here.  It will be taking place from October 1st through the 5th.  During this time, employers are asked to make sure their driving employees are safe.  Make sure that everyone knows how to properly operate the vehicle they’re designated to, they’re well-rested behind the wheel and that they know about the risks of distracted driving. It’s the employers responsibility to make sure that employees’ eyes are on the road and off of needless distractions.

Our Boulder workers’ compensation attorneys understand that we’ve got a lot to do throughout our work day.  It might be tempting, especially for driving employees, to feel the need to talk on the phone and deal with other work-related business behind the wheel.  Driving is no time to take your eyes off of the road.  Employers are asked to enact a distracted driving rule in the workplace.  Your employees’ safety should be worth more than the risks associated with distracted driving.  The truth of the matter is that each and every one of these accidents are preventable!

As a matter of fact, distracted driving is a growing and very serious challenge to road safety.  The increase in these kinds of car accident demands a lot of attention.

Previous years’ campaign, like the “Focus 360″ campaign, revolved around these same concepts.  It asked workers to go look into what drivers can do to reduce the risks of distracted driving, while taking into account the responsibilities and roles of being a driver, a passenger, a cyclist and even a pedestrian.

In 2010, there were close to 6 million commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers who were registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).  It’s these kinds of vehicles that come with the highest risks for serious injury and even death in the event of an accident.  It’s important to make sure that these drivers are safe and responsible behind the wheel.
